Metro Water Recovery (MWR) is the largest wastewater district in the Rocky Mountain region, serving over 2.2 million people. This video educates children ages 8-14 about the wastewater treatment process in a way they can understand by using Metro’s animated mascot, Fin the orange spotted sunfish.

Project background.

We designed Metro’s mascot “Fin” to help Metro teach children the complex topic of wastewater treatment in an engaging, accessible way.

Fin’s first assignment was to be the tour guide in Metro’s new “How We Treat Wastewater” video. Fin guides viewers through actual footage of Metro’s facility, creating a unique blend of animation and reality that makes technical concepts approachable.

Working from Metro’s script, we carefully crafted every element – from selecting the perfect voice talent for the gender-neutral Fin to capturing professional b-roll footage of the facility. Our team seamlessly integrated Fin’s animated presence with real-world video, adding motion graphics to highlight key processes. The result is a dynamic educational tool that entertains while clearly explaining complex scientific concepts.

While originally designed to teach children, the video’s impact reached far beyond its intended audience. Metro employees reported that the clear, visual explanation helped them better understand their own facility’s processes, demonstrating how effective storytelling can bridge knowledge gaps across all age groups.

The project’s success led to the creation of a dedicated Spanish version, further extending its educational reach across communities.
